One of the trends for 2012/2013 continues to be ‘old is new’ – retro and vintage inspired looks with a contemporary twist and dashes of bright color. Vintage wedding dresses with ornate, exquisite detailing, gorgeous textures, and yes, beautiful old-world lace embellishments are all the rage now.
- Lace on wedding gowns – Lace has seen a tremendous comeback after several decades of being seen as out of style. Regardless of whether you choose a gown entirely covered with a lace overlay or one with just a few lace inserts or just lace sleeves, this type of detailing is currently very fashionable. A modern twist to the trend has been to drape a metallic lace over a solid color.
- Sleeves – Gowns with sleeves are now in style! Lace sleeves have seen burgeoning popularity ever since women all over the world saw Kate Middleton’s wedding gown with long sleeves. And it comes as no surprise that interest in the late Princess Diana’s wedding gown sleeves had re-emerged. Wedding gown designers are adding similar style elements to their new designs. But, the sleeves are more contemporary and not as poufy (THANK GOD!). While lace sleeves look absolutely elegant and stunning (and cover up poorly toned arms, blemishes and scars), they can be difficult to get just right. If sleeves are too tight, your arms will bulge; if too loose, the lace will look baggy. An alternative is a bolero jacket in lace beneath a strapless gown. However, if you want nothing but real sleeves, brace yourself for time-consuming adjustments.
- The accessories – Your gorgeous wedding gown will put you at the center of attention, but your appearance will be incomplete without perfectly coordinated accessories. If you choose to incorporate a lace veil or gloves into your wedding ensemble, also consider adding alternatives embellishments such as ribbon, pearls and crystals.
If there is a catchword that describes contemporary fashion it is ‘details’ and bridal ensembles are no exception. From a long train cascading down the church aisle to a gown inlayed with inserts or the cut and drape of a translucent sleeve, clever detailing with lace can transmute a plain silhouette into a very special one that incorporates romance, history and tradition into your nuptials.
What do you all think of this trend – lace or no lace?
